Diamyd Medical is making exciting progress in using artificial intelligence (AI) to predict who is at risk for type 1 diabetes

Along with Mainly AI and other partners in the ASSET project, Diamyd Medical presented its findings at the March 2025 ATTD conference in Amsterdam.

The research aims to improve early detection and personalized treatment, helping people at risk for type 1 diabetes get better care sooner.

Why AI matters for type 1 diabetes screening

  • Estimating the precise timing of when someone will develop type 1 diabetes has been a challenge.
  • To predict their individual risk, the AI looks at a person’s:
    • Genetics
    • Immune system markers
    • Medical history

How AI improves early detection of type 1 diabetes

  • The new Individual Survival Prediction (ISP) model from Diamyd Medical can estimate exactly when someone is likely to develop type 1 diabetes.
  • It was tested using data from the TEDDY study, a long-term research project that follows children at risk for diabetes.

What this means for people at risk for type 1 diabetes

  • AI-powered screening helps doctors create personalized plans for each patient.
  • People at high risk can have more frequent check-ups and earlier treatment options.
  • The goal is to delay or even prevent type 1 diabetes by catching it early.
  • Currently, the only FDA-approved way to delay type 1 diabetes is by identifying autoantibodies and utilizing TZIELD (teplizumab).

The challenges of bringing AI health tech to the U.S.

This promising research faces major challenges in the U.S., where fragmented health records hinder AI-driven health checks.

In contrast, Europe’s shared system allows easier access to health records for doctors, hospitals, and AI.

Countries with better data tracking can adopt these technologies faster and see benefits sooner.

The future of AI in diabetes care

  • Diamyd Medical and its partners plan to keep improving their AI models.
  • The ASSET project, funded by the Swedish Innovation Agency, is working on even better ways to predict and manage type 1 diabetes.
  • The ultimate goal is a healthcare system where AI helps doctors provide the right care at the right time for every patient.

What you can do now

Although AI technology to check for type 1 diabetes isn’t widely available yet, there are things you can do right now to find out if you might be at risk for type 1 diabetes.

Taking these steps early can help you stay healthier in the long run!

If you’re concerned about your risk, consider getting screened for autoantibodies.
